Cortez Brown: A Forgotten Victim of Police Brutality

A few days ago, the trial began for the 3 Chicago police who were videotaped beating 4 businessmen in a bar brawl.

This example of alleged police brutality has captured the attention of the city and news media, but there are other victims of police brutality that have been virtually forgotten.

One such victim is Cortez Brown.

Brown was convicted in 1990 for two murders because he falsely confessed to the crime after three of Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge’s underlings bludgeoned him with a flashlight.

Originally arrested for a traffic violation, Brown was taken to the notorious Area 3 Chicago Police Department where three detectives—John O’Brien, John Paladino and Tony Maslanka—chained him to a wall, verbally threatened him and beat him repeatedly with fists and flashlights until he agreed to submit a bogus confession to the crimes.

Today, Brown languishes in jail and has been there for 18 years, 12 of which was spent on Death Row before former Gov. Ryan commuted the sentence to life. Brown and his attorney, Locke Bowman from the MacArthur Justice Center, have asked the court to overturn his sentence and an evidentiary hearing is scheduled for May.

Like the 4 businessmen allegedly attacked at the West Loop bar, Brown was brutalized by Chicago’s police. His story deserves to be told.
